Easy Mata Kanimona Recipe

What is Mata Kanimona?

As the name suggests, it is a very loved, popular and sought after winter vegetarian green pea curry recipe from North India.

Fresh soft green peas are mashed into a coarse paste and then cooked with potatoes, dry lentil dumplings, spices and masala“.

Winter is my favorite season. When I was growing up, I used to wait patiently for “Fresh Peas or Harimatar” Arrived so mom could prepare the dish. In those days, we relied on seasonal vegetables because most produce was not available year-round.

So certain dishes were very special because they were only available during certain seasons, unlike now where our influence is truly global.

So, the moment we got our fresh peas, I remember sitting in the winter sun with my mom, her friends, and the kids, taking the peas out of their shells. For us kids it was more like a game as we used to count the number of pods we collected and who came first 🙂

After the peas are shelled, distribute them evenly among the ladies and we will soon be preparing the dish.

return, Since we cook matar (green peas) in tomato curry, the color of the dish usually turns dark orange or brown. To make it look green, don't add tomatoes.
