A Barrie woman has been charged with driving under the influence after police say a driver crashed into a home on the city's east side and damaged a gas line.

At 7:11 p.m. Sunday, police, the Barrie Fire Department and Simcoe County Paramedics responded to a motor vehicle crash on Grove Street East in Barrie.

Police said a mid-size pickup truck entered the driveway, struck the home and damaged a gas supply line.

Authorities then ordered a small-scale evacuation of some homes in the surrounding area.

When police spoke with the driver, officers reported that they noticed signs that she was impaired, so they arrested her.

She was then transported to Barrie police headquarters but refused to take part in the ensuing investigation, police said.

A 63-year-old Barrie woman was charged with driving under the influence, failure or refusal to comply with a requirement and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

She was subsequently released and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie on June 17.

Residents were forced to leave their homes and wait for the gas leak to be repaired, returning after 11pm that night.

The 63-year-old suspect's driver's license was suspended for 90 days and his motor vehicle was impounded for seven days.
