As the City of Regina officially declares Gender and Sexual Orientation Diversity Pride Week, Queen City Pride The week-long celebration kicked off with a Pride flag-raising ceremony.

The QCP co-chairs said seeing the pride flag outside City Hall gave a sense of pride and hope and showed the city that LGBTQ2 people were part of the community.

“It means one more day for me not to be scared,” Mirta Rivera said. “(The Pride flag) tells everyone that we belong here, we are part of the community and we are still going to fight for our rights.”

Carla Blakley, pastor of Lakeview United Church, sees herself as an ally, advocate and accomplice to the “2SLGBTQIA+ community.”

“Pride is a celebration… a community coming together,” Blakely said. “Pride started with protests and we still need protests…Pride, to me, is a strong belief that every child and every person has the right and the right to be loved, to be heard, to be invited to events and to be respected.”

There are a variety of events happening every day in the city, including the QCP Dance at Lakeview United Church, Drag Queen Bingo, Pride Tea, Family Carnival, and more. The QCP Parade will be held on June 15th.
