As the City of Regina officially declares Gender and Sexual Orientation Diversity Pride Week, Queen City Pride The week-long celebration kicked off with a Pride flag-raising ceremony.

The QCP co-chair said seeing the pride flag outside City Hall gives a sense of pride and hope and shows the city that LGBTQ2 people are part of the community.

“It means one more day for me not to be scared,” Mirta Rivera said. “(The Pride flag) tells everyone that we belong here, we are part of the community and we are still going to fight for our rights.”

Carla Blakley, pastor of Lakeview United Church, sees herself as an ally, advocate and accomplice to the “2SLGBTQIA+ community.”

“Pride is a celebration… the community comes together,” Blakely said. “Pride started with protests and we still need protests…Pride, to me, is a resolute belief that every child and every person has the right and deserves to be loved, to be heard, to be invited to events and to be respected.”

The city hosts a variety of events every day, including the QCP Dance at Lakeview United Church, Drag Queen Bingo, Pride Tea, Family Carnival and more. The QCP Parade will be held on June 15th.
