The City of Winnipeg says buses are now safer for passengers and drivers thanks to live streaming video of all 607 buses available from the Winnipeg Transit Authority's control centre.
The city government said the control center is staffed 24 hours a day, allowing managers to immediately obtain real-time information on any bus and get appropriate help in an emergency.
It's part of an ongoing program that began with the installation of modems in certain city buses in 2019 and continues into a pilot project that will include live streaming on select buses in 2021.
Mayor Scott Gillingham called the move a “sensible step” towards bus safety.
“It also complements other recent initiatives such as the establishment of community safety teams to patrol around buses and bus stops, the installation of improved driver protection covers, and the modernisation of on-board communications systems,” Gillingham said in a statement.
