The YMCA’s Strong Kids Bike Ride, the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year, is being held at Kelowna’s Stewart Park for the first time in 17 years.
“We’re doing this to raise funds and awareness for local children and at-risk youth,” said Tammie Watson, vice-president of marketing and philanthropy at the YMCA of Southern Interior British Columbia.
“Being downtown and being part of the greater community, hopefully it will help people understand a little bit about the support we do at the YMCA for families in need.”

Watson said one in eight children lives in poverty.
“Some families can’t afford extracurricular activities, so these activities are so important that we can make sure kids from disadvantaged families aren’t left behind,” Watson said.
The day’s outdoor entertainment included street hockey, a BBQ, a kids’ area and plenty of cycling, with participants hopping on their bikes for spin classes throughout the day.
Funds raised during the fundraising day help families keep their children involved in sports and all YMCA programs. This year's fundraising goal is $205,000.
