University of Toronto graduation ceremonies go ahead amid campus protests | Globalnews.ca

The University of Toronto's inaugural graduation ceremony went ahead amid ongoing pro-Palestinian protests on campus, with more ceremonies set to take place today.

Dozens of graduating students walked across the stage at Commencement Hall on Monday to receive their diplomas, several holding Palestinian flags or wearing scarves with the word “Palestine” printed on them.

More than 30 graduation ceremonies are scheduled through June 21 as the university seeks a court injunction to end the camps.

The school expressed concern about the encampment's impact on graduation ceremonies, but protesters said they did not believe their presence would disrupt the ceremony.

Protesters said they were determined to persist with their protest until the university meets its divestment demands from companies that have profited from Israel’s offensive on Gaza.

The university argued in court papers that the camp prompted numerous reports of harassment and hate speech, claims protest organizers denied.
