Calgary’s Ukrainian community celebrated its heritage and culture in a big way this weekend.

The 14th Calgary Ukrainian Festival Held at the Acadia Recreation Centre, it features vendors, artisans, songs and traditional dancing.

Organizer Christina Chumak said the event drew people from all over the province, with performers even flying in from Ukraine.

“What started as a vision to unite the community has turned into this incredible event… with thousands of attendees, and we’re growing and getting bigger every year,” Chumak said.

Calgary is home to many Ukrainian refugees who fled their country's war with Russia.

“We're welcoming so many newcomers to Calgary and Canada and we're welcoming them with open arms. It's a really great opportunity to bring the community together, bring newcomers together and provide a sense of normalcy during a very difficult time,” Chumak said.

She added: “We do everything we can to put a smile on people’s faces, make them feel at home in Canada and welcome them the best way we know how.”
