Biden plans to limit asylum
President Biden is expected to sign an executive order today allowing him to temporarily Close the US-Mexico border and prohibit immigrants from entering. The move would suspend protections for asylum seekers in the U.S.
The order would be the strictest border policy yet enacted by Biden, who faces intense political pressure to address illegal immigration ahead of the November presidential election. It also echoes Donald Trump’s 2018 efforts to stem immigration, pronouncements that were slammed by Democrats and blocked by federal courts.
