Toronto church fire destroys Group of Seven murals, police believe fire is not suspicious - Toronto | Globalnews.ca

Toronto police say the devastating fire at the historic St. Anne's Anglican Church is not being treated as suspicious at this time, but investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the blaze.

A four-alarm fire tore through the national historic site early Sunday morning, destroying the unique Group of Seven murals inside.

Police and firefighters are now at the scene and some church staff were seen carrying documents out of the badly damaged building.

The fire destroyed the dome and burned paintings inside the church that were created by three members of the Group of Seven and other famous Canadian artists in the 1920s.

No one was inside the church in the city's Little Portugal neighbourhood at the time and there were no reports of injuries.

Father Don Bayes, pastor of St Anne's Church, said church members were shocked and saddened but determined to rise from the ashes.
