The Grove welcomes the community to Guelph's newest youth centre | Globalnews.ca

Grove Hubs in Guelph, Wellington invites the public to visit its newest youth centre.

During an open house event Wednesday, hundreds of people had the opportunity to tour the centre, located on Woolwich Street southeast of Woodlawn Road in Guelph.

Visitors can see some of the facilities inside, including a games room, study room, kitchen, laundry room and shower rooms.

The youth had the opportunity to play pool or ping pong with Guelph Storm players Parker Snellgrove, Rowan Tope and Brayden Gillespie. Canadian Para-Hockey Team Captain Tyler McGregor was also in attendance.

“What we’re seeing here is a reflection of our community coming into this space,” said Jeff Hoffman, executive director of the Grove.

The newest Grove Centre is located in the same building as the Canadian Mental Health Association's Child and Youth Services Building. The Youth Centre opened in February to coincide with the opening of the new Canadian Mental Health Association office.

“A lot of families live in the north side of Guelph and they could use this service,” Hoffman said of the decision to open the centre in Woolwich. “It makes a lot of sense to have services in a space in the north that serves families and youth.”

There are five Grove Youth Centres in Guelph and Wellington Counties. Each centre is designed to provide a one-stop service for young people aged 12 to 26. In addition to recreation, the centres provide mental health services, primary care, education, employment and other community and social services.

“Our community raised $15 million to allow us to open these places,” Hoffman said. “It’s been great to see the community engage with this space that they’ve created.”
