Saskatoon's election season officially begins on Saturday, June 1English Stone It marks the beginning of the campaign expense period for city council candidates.

Many new faces will enter politics, while some will leave to seek new opportunities.

It was announced this week that District 2 Rep. Hilary Goff Will not seek re-election in the 2024 municipal election.

“It has been a true privilege for me to have had the opportunity to represent the residents of District 2 over the past eight years,” Goff said. “I am grateful to everyone who has had the opportunity to work alongside me towards a stronger, more equitable Saskatoon.

“I am grateful to every neighbor and community partner who has been willing to discuss with us the challenges and opportunities facing our community. It has been a privilege to learn from and work with you.”

Second District Councilwoman Hilary Gough will not seek re-election.

For those new candidates, Saskatoon elections director Shellie Bryant said to keep a close eye on donations and spending during the campaign.

For voters, you can expect candidates to emerge soon.

“For voters, they can know that candidates may start knocking on doors … and they may be asked to sign a nomination form,” Bryant said. “They have to be a voter in that district to sign the nomination form. They don't have to live in that district if the candidate is running in that district.”

While Election Day is still a few months away, it will be interesting to track turnout.

During the last municipal election, the COVID-19 pandemic was in full swing and a major snowstorm hit Saskatoon, delaying voting.

On Election Day, Saskatoon residents will elect a mayor and 10 city councillors (one in each ward), as well as 10 trustees for the Saskatoon Public School Board and seven trustees for the Greater Saskatoon Catholic School Board.

At least four city council seats will have new members, and Saskatoon will have a new mayor.

The election is scheduled for November 13, 2024.
