The second annual Happy Trails Walkathon produced a “positive” outcome for the Guelph Humane Society.
Nearly 250 walkers and their four-legged friends attended the June 2 event, which organizers said raised more than $62,000.
Executive Director Lisa Veit said the community is very willing and committed to making Guelph a better habitat for animals.
“The funds raised will not only help the 3,000 animals we care for each year, but will also provide basic medical care, behavioral support and whatever support they need to be adopted to new families,” Witt said.
She said the money raised came from community donations and sponsors.

Participants choose to walk one kilometre or five kilometres in groups or individually. The event aims to continue to be one of the organization’s largest fundraisers in Guelph.
Not only was the day well received by supporters, but the results were also cause for celebration, second only to the Humane Society Rescued an abandoned Chihuahua Cleo was named for her in May by the Guelph Lake Conservancy.
Witt said given the current difficult times, unfortunate incidents like this can only strengthen the community's awareness and love for animal protection.
“This situation is obviously heartbreaking for us. It's heartbreaking for our community,” she said.
Witt said it’s been great to be a part of the organization and to have a wonderful community around it, with supporters coming together to raise funds to help animals like Cleo get cared for by GHS.
She said Cleo still needs medical help but is doing very well.
Witt said that because the event was a success and exceeded its fundraising goal of $35,000, the Humane Society is now planning for the third annual walkathon next year.
“The community really enjoys this event. We're happy to host the community and have them spend the day here enjoying the trails in the area,” she said.
“We are fully committed to planning to go ahead with this event and ensure it is a success.”
