But Wayne was diagnosed with cancer last December and recently suffered a stroke — leaving him unable to do the things he once was able to do.

“So my parents had to close because they were the backbone of this store. Without them, I don't know how this store would have stayed afloat,” said their daughter, Drew DeCoster.

“It's a safe space for the community, and my parents put a lot of effort into it; they welcome everyone. They even give free meals to people who are having a hard time or are down on their luck.”

The couple's other daughter, Bridget, said her parents always kept prices low and the environment welcoming. That's what makes it so special.

“This is like a home away from home for people. Especially students who are away from home, or people who are traveling with loved ones who need treatment in the hospital,” she said.

Bridget and Drew DeCoster said they were overwhelmed by the outpouring of support.

“It was the staff who welcomed us all with open arms and made sure we were well fed, finished our meals and took any leftovers home,” she recalled.

“Joining in our conversations, even asking us questions about our lives, making us feel like part of their family.”

The DeCostes have remained consistent in supporting the community through thick and thin, and now they’re getting some support. GoFundMe campaign More than $32,000 has been raised to support the family in their treatment for Wayne without the income from the cafe.

“It’s been so nice to see the people that they’ve supported, loved, fed, entertained over the years, giving back, thanking them for the hugs, thanking them for the food, thanking them for the love, thanking them for the free coffee and the garlic fries,” Bridget said.
