Orioles beat Blue Jays for second straight game | Globalnews.ca

TORONTO — Ryan Mountcastle hit a three-run homer as Baltimore scored four runs in the third inning and followed it up with a two-run homer to help the Orioles beat the Toronto Blue Jays 10-1 at Rogers Centre on Tuesday.

Connor Norby hit a two-run homer and Gunnar Henderson scored three times as Baltimore (39-20) won for the 10th time in 12 games. Adley Rutschman drove in two runs and scored twice for the Orioles, who beat Toronto 9-5.

Baltimore starting pitcher Corbin Burns (6-2) allowed a home run to George Springer in a strong seventh inning. The right-hander allowed four hits, a walk and five strikeouts.

Toronto (28-32) lost for the third time in four games.

Trevor Richards started for the Blue Jays, filling in for Alek Manoah, who was out with a sprained elbow ligament.

Richards quit all six batters he faced, striking out four, but was replaced after two innings because he had thrown 40 pitches.

Left-hander Genesis Cabrera (2-2) came in for Toronto but lasted only two outs after a pitch hit Colton Cowser and walked Henderson. Rutschman scored Cowser and Mountcastle hit his ninth homer of the year to welcome Bowden Francis.

Baltimore’s core showed its strength again in the fifth inning.

Henderson hit a double to the right-field corner, Francis fouled out and moved to third base, where Rutschmann hit a single to score Henderson. Mountcastle followed with an unmistakable 443-foot drive that landed in the second-floor stands overlooking center field.

Relief pitcher Zach Pope, a native of Brampton, Ont., drew back-to-back walks to start the seventh inning. Henderson added another run by scoring on Anthony Santander's double.

When Springer hit his fifth home run of the year in the second half, he finally got the crowd of 28,816 cheering.

Norby made his debut in Baltimore's 7-2 win on Monday, hitting a home run off Nate Pearson in the eighth inning. It was his first major league hit of his career.

The match took 2 hours and 39 minutes.

Roster Changes

The Blue Jays reinstated Francis from the 15-day injured list before the game after he missed 34 games with extensor tendinitis in his right forearm.

Right-hander Ryan Burr was sent down to Triple-A Buffalo. Right-hander Joel Kuhnel, who was sent down to the Bison last Friday, has chosen to become a free agent.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider revealed before the game that top prospect Richie Tiedemann (left elbow) is expected to pitch two innings during live batting practice in Florida this week.

The left-hander was limited to 44 innings last year because of inflammation in his left shoulder and biceps.

Next Steps

Right-hander Jose Berrios (5-4, 2.78 ERA) was scheduled to start for Toronto on Wednesday night. The Orioles have yet to announce their starting lineup.

The four-game series will conclude with a matinee on Thursday.
