NDP wants price caps on grocery staples if costs don't fall - National Party | Globalnews.ca

The federal NDP is calling for price caps on grocery store staples if the Liberal government can't convince grocers to lower their own prices.

For months, the Liberals have been trying to get Canada's big grocers to sign up to a code of conduct that they claim will lower food prices for everyone.

French Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne even said he was trying to attract foreign grocers to introduce competition.

Some food prices have fallen recently as inflation has fallen slightly, but the NDP says the price drops are nowhere near as large as the increases seen over the past three years.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said he is tired of Canadians being deceived by businesses and said companies continue to jack up prices.

Last month, some shoppers launched a boycott of Loblaw after a month of protests by consumers who felt pressured and blamed the grocery giant.
