A 21-year-old man was sentenced Thursday to life in prison with no chance of parole for 13 years for the 2021 killing of a Montreal teenager.

In October 2021, 16-year-old Jannai Dopwell-Bailey was attacked and stabbed repeatedly outside her school in Montreal’s Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood.

Last month, Andre Donette was convicted of second-degree murder for his role in the attack.

Second-degree murder carries an automatic life sentence with a parole period of 10 to 25 years.

Quebec Superior Court Justice Annie Émond said factors against Dornet included the seriousness of the crime and his behavior after the attack.

Emond was referring to a video posted on social media of the crime, as well as an incident in which another inmate was assaulted while in custody.

The judge also took into account Donette's age, saying his youth meant he had time to undergo rehabilitation.

In 2023, another minor accused of the killing was also convicted of second-degree murder.

According to testimony from witnesses at the trial, which concluded in May, Donette used pepper spray on Dopwell-Bailey during the attack, and the minor also stabbed the victim multiple times with a knife.
