RCMP investigating head-on collision that left one person dead Fort McMurrayAlta.

member Wood Buffalo RCMP were dispatched to the scene of a collision on Highway 63. Mildred Lakearound 10:38 a.m. Tuesday near the north gate access road leading to Suncor.

Police said a preliminary investigation showed a pickup truck traveling northbound collided with a semi-trailer traveling southbound.

The truck driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries and was in critical condition. RCMP said Wednesday that the driver died from his injuries.

“The driver of the semi-truck did not suffer any physical injuries as a result of the collision,” RCMP said in a news release.

“Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the collision.”

Police said the Wood Buffalo RCMP Urban Traffic Services and the Alberta RCMP Forensic Collision Reconstruction Unit will continue to investigate.

The accident closed Highway 63 for several hours. Police restored single-lane traffic on the highway on Tuesday evening and deployed officers to direct traffic.

Highway 63 has now been fully reopened to traffic.
