A 31-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death of a young child in a boating accident in Quebec's Upper Laurentians region.

Quebec provincial police say the suspect driving the boat could face charges of driving under the influence causing death.

He was arrested on Sunday and released on a promise to appear in court at a later date.

Police were called to the Baskatoon Reservoir around 6:15 p.m. Saturday about 220 kilometres northwest of Montreal.

Police have not yet provided details but said the body of the child, who is under five years old, was found in the water overnight.

Police said only one boat was involved.
