A public meeting will be held next week in the Shuswap region of British Columbia to discuss landslide risks in the area following wildfires.

Living with wildfires


The fire started on July 12th due to a lightning strike and burned slowly for more than a month until strong winds fanned the flames on August 19th and 20th. Ultimately, more than 8,000 people were evacuated and the fire was not brought under control until late September.

Over the next few weeks, work began to understand the dangers following wildfires, such as flooding, mudslides and rockfall hazards.

“These reports indicate that certain areas require more detailed assessment to determine the level of risk to public safety, property and critical infrastructure,” the district said.

“A more detailed assessment recently completed by BGC Engineering looked at the potential for debris flows or flooding following a wildfire.

“We also conducted a detailed analysis of how certain areas would be affected if mudslides or debris flows occurred. The BGC also looked at possible options to mitigate these risks.”

Of the 73 assessed watersheds in the burned area, 10 are classified as high-risk, according to the district.

The BGC will present its findings at the meeting to help affected residents understand their level of risk, CSRD said.

The district also said it will discuss personal preparedness and emergency services and will answer questions from the public.

For those who are unable to attend the June 13 meeting, a virtual meeting will also be held on Monday, June 17.
