Mike and Bev Pannett have been married for 61 years and do just about everything together.

“A lot of people had to separate because they had different problems,” Mike said. “But it was great to be able to work together.”

The couple lived at Cambridge Manor, an assisted living facility northwest of Calgary.

They want to spend as much time as possible creating memories because time is running out.

“She has no memory of her past and now she needs help.”

Bev was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease About six years ago. Mike said she had no memory of her family or friends and soon Bev's memory of him would fade, too.

“For me, it's just: Always be available. I can't stop and feel sorry for myself, it won't do any good.”

That's why the couple went on a unique ride on a designer battery-powered tricycle on World Bicycle Day. There is no age limit for cycling.

Mike and Bev Pannett enjoyed a ride while Morgan Poppy of Cambridge Manor drove a tricycle.

Morgan Pippi of Cambridge Manor said: “We have an engine and a pilot to propel us, while the elderly can sit in the front seat and enjoy the scenery without having to exert any physical effort.”

“As recreation therapists, it is our job to ensure that our residents and seniors can still participate in all the recreational and leisure activities that are meaningful to them,” she said.

Mike said it was a great experience.

“Just get out there and get some fresh air, other people are doing all the work and we just have to enjoy the environment.”
