Montreal police say crime rates in the city have increased in 2023, driven mainly by crimes such as assaults, robberies and car thefts.
The 2023 annual report, released on Monday, found that violations of the Criminal Code increased by 12% compared to 2022 and were 24.5% higher than the average of the previous five years.
Police Commissioner Fady Dagher said the increase in crime stems mainly from assaults and other crimes against the person, as well as property crimes, including car thefts.

There were 353 hate crimes and 171 hate incidents in 2023, which Dagel called a record.
