Good weather conditions allow aerial search for missing climber in Squamish - BC | Globalnews.ca

Officials said weather conditions in Squamish were favorable enough to allow helicopters to search the area for the three missing climbers.

Police and rescue teams hope good weather on Wednesday afternoon will aid the search for three climbers missing since Friday.

Officials believe three people are missing from Garibaldi Mountain near Squamish.

A spokeswoman for Squamish RCMP said the scene was cleared to allow for an aerial assessment of the area before search and rescue teams were deployed to “difficult terrain.”

Squamish Search and Rescue confirmed a helicopter was available to search the area Wednesday afternoon due to favorable weather conditions.

A search and rescue spokesman said: “We expect good weather this afternoon to allow team members to observe the Atwell Peak area from the air by helicopter. The specific time of the search and rescue operation depends on the continued clear sky trend.”

The climber was reported overdue on May 31 and was last seen on Atwell Peak on the south edge of Mount Garibaldi, about 70 kilometres north of Vancouver.

Corporal Ashley McKay told a news conference that search and rescue efforts had been hampered by bad weather and a high avalanche risk in recent days.

The RCMP is working with Squamish Search and Rescue, the Police Dog Service and the RCMP Air Service on the search.

Squamish Search and Rescue manager BJ Chute said in a news release that avalanche technicians will assess the risk given the winter conditions in the area.

The RCMP asks the public to stay away from the search area while the search and rescue operation is ongoing.

Police are not releasing the missing climber's name out of respect for his family.
