Family says Surrey homicide victim spoke to mother seconds before shooting - BC | Globalnews.ca

The family of 28-year-old Yuvraj Goyal said they were shocked when they learned about his death.

Police found Goyal dead outside his home at 164th Street and 10th Avenue Friday morning. He had been shot.

“He was coming back from the gym, doing his daily training, and was just getting out of his car when he was shot,” said Goyal's brother-in-law, Bhawandeep. “I can't believe this happened. It's very hard… We are all in shock. This is a loss that can never be replaced.”

Bawandeep said Goyal was on the phone with his mother who lives in India before he was shot.

“He had been talking to his mom about a minute or 30 seconds before he was shot. He called her when he left the gym. The phone logs put him off at 8:45 a.m. and the shooting happened at 8:46 a.m.,” he said. “He got out of the car, said goodnight to his mom in India, and then he was shot.”

Goyal’s sister Charu Singhla said the family did not know why he was killed and he was a kind-hearted man.

“He had a pure heart, a perfect brother, a perfect son,” she told Global News on Sunday. “I don't know why … why would they kill an innocent person?”

Goyal worked at a car dealership in Surrey, where Singla said he excelled.

“He has big dreams and he's achieving them. He's successful and he's smart. He's hard-working,” she said.

Singla said the family found no signs that he had any links to organized crime.

The first time Goyal's family learned about his death was when his friend (also his colleague) went to visit Goyal, who did not show up for work.

When the friend arrived, police had already cordoned off the area. The family then saw reports of the shooting on the news.

“The police called me and said he might have put my contact details at his workplace,” Singla said. “As soon as we heard about it, we went to his house and saw the same thing. We waited there for someone to reveal the information to us, but no one did until later in the evening.”

Bawandeap and Singhla got the keys from the police and after entering the house, they found something heartbreaking. There were several unopened toys and gifts in Goyal's house.

They believed that these gifts were for their children because he never returned empty-handed.

“It's love … it's affection. He knows being an uncle is not easy,” Bawandeep said. “These will never be opened now.”

According to the British Columbia Homicide Police Service, investigators are working to determine a motive for the shooting because Goyal did not have any previous experience with police.

Police announced that four suspects were arrested and charged on the day of the shooting.

Manvir Basram, 23, of Surrey, Sahib Basra, 20, of Surrey, Harkirat Jhutty, 23, of Surrey, and Keilon Francois, 20, of Ontario, were charged with first-degree murder on Saturday.

Anyone with information, including video footage of the shooting or the vehicle on fire, is asked to contact IHIT at 1-877-551-4448.
