Creative chaos draws thousands to Vernon Recreation Centre - Okanagan | Globalnews.ca

Creative Chaos is more than just a craft show, it’s one of the largest tourist events in Vernon, B.C.

The annual event, held over three days at the Vernon Recreation Centre, attracted nearly 15,000 spectators.

“There are a couple of reasons (for the high attendance). First of all, it's free. Admission is free, so we do ask for donations for the food bank, but we invite artisans from all over Canada,” said Ingrid Baron, president of Creative Chaos.

The event saw approximately 226 artisans and craftspeople offering pottery, wood products, jewelry, clothing and a variety of food items.

“Not only do customers like coming here, but vendors like coming here too,” Barron said.

Creative Chaos began in 1975 as a group of students who would come by bus from the area to sell their crafts, and Baron said the event has grown each year since then.

Whether you come with an idea in mind or not, it’s hard not to find something you’ll want to take home.

Shirley Hoffmann owns a company called Vernon Classic Creations and has been a vendor at the event for three years.

“We have totes, wallets, casual bags, you name it, we have it,” Hoffman said, adding that her products are all made from 100 percent cotton or faux leather.

“We buy (materials) … mostly at quilt shops and a few other fabric stores in town. We use high-end products.”

Hoffman said she has repeat customers every year and that she sells about 12 to 15 bags per day at the event.
