Freight trains from Canadian National Railway (CN) Heading west HintonThe train derailed around 5:30 a.m., said Liam MacDonald, a spokesman for the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.

He told Global News that a total of 20 carriages were believed to have derailed.

It was not immediately clear what was on board the train, but McDonald said there was no hazardous cargo involved.

Canadian National Railway spokesperson Ashley Michnowski issued a statement to Global News saying the train derailed west of Hinton.

She said initial reports indicated the derailed carriage was carrying sand.

“CN Railway and local emergency services are on scene,” Michnovsky said.

“We will continue to keep you informed as this incident progresses.”

The National Transportation Safety Board said in a media advisory that investigators were on their way to collect information and assess the cause of the accident in order to improve traffic safety.
