Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre hosts 'baby shower' for young birds and mammals - Calgary | Globalnews.ca

A new appeal has been issued by some well-meaning Calgarians asking them to lend a hand and care for injured and orphaned wildlife.

Calgary WildlifeZoos and menageries that operate bird and mammal rehabilitation facilities are inviting people to help with their spring “baby showers.”

“We needed formula, we needed blankets,” said Melanie Whalen of Calgary Wildlife Conservation. “So we designed it right after the baby shower.”

Spring is the agency's busiest time of year as staff care for a variety of young wild animals that have been orphaned for a variety of reasons.

The Baby Shower will run until the end of June, and the Calgary Wildlife Foundation will accept donations in the following ways: Its website.

“We need incubators to raise lots of baby birds and young mammals,” Warren said. “We don't get any government funding, we are funded entirely by the generosity of the public so we can continue to do this work.”

The work requires long hours from Calgary Wildlife Conservation staff and volunteers, but they say it’s worth it.

“It’s so rewarding to be able to take these injured or orphaned animals and treat them,” Warren said. “And then return them to where they belong.”
