It could take crews about a week to fix a serious water main break that's forcing Calgarians to conserve water, according to the City of Calgary's drinking water distribution manager.

Emergency officials held a news conference Saturday afternoon to provide an update on the water issues that first emerged Wednesday evening.

Chris Houston told reporters that maintenance crews have been working around the clock to repair the water main.

He said crews are continuing to drain the site to determine what needs repairing, and they are also preparing to inspect the water pipe to determine the cause of the break.

“We just want Calgarians to be prepared and understand that it’s going to take some time to get back to use,” Houston said, adding that there are still many unknowns.

“We want to make sure we take the time to get it right. If everything goes well, we expect it will take at least another five to seven days to get it sorted out.”

A major water main break in the northwest Calgary community of Montgomery on Wednesday night has sparked concerns about water supplies and prompted a boil water advisory for residents in the Bowness community.

Calgarians were asked Thursday to stop using water outdoors and minimize water use indoors.

City staff are advising people to take shorter showers, flush less often and put off doing laundry.
