James Grandy of the British Columbia RCMP said the incident happened at a bank around 2 p.m. Saturday.

According to police, the man was trying to cash a forged check at a bank when officers were called to the scene.

Police arrived at the scene and arrested the man.

“While escorting the male outside, a struggle ensued and the male reportedly produced a weapon. An officer discharged his weapon and shot the male,” Grandy said in a news release.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The provincial police watchdog, British Columbia's Independent Investigations Office, has been asked to investigate the shooting and subsequent death.

As the matter is currently under investigation by the police watchdog, police will not release further information.

The investigation will delve into the details of the confrontation and whether the force used was necessary, proportionate and reasonable in the circumstances.
