About Besan Bread Toast

So if you are a classic lover Bread PakodaFritters are ubiquitous on almost every corner of North Indian streets, so this Besan Toast will tempt you too.

In fact, I call this Besan Toast a low-fat version of pakora, minus the taste and aroma of the carom seeds (ajwain). So, obviously I won't be adding ajwain to the batter for this particular recipe. However, if you want the typical bread pakora flavor, then you can add camu seeds to the batter.

Some people also refer to this besan bread toast as the savory eggless version French toast. But I don't want to call it that because it's nothing like any savory or sweet French toast. See the link I highlighted here to see how the two differ.

To make besan toast, you can use any bread of your choice like white bread, brown bread or even whole wheat bread. The flavor of each one will be amazing. Apart from gram flour, the other ingredients in the batter are onions, tomatoes, green chillies, ginger, coriander leaves, salt and some spice powder.

I add a little asafoetida or hing to the batter of the besan bread toast because I like the flavor it brings to the dish. But if you don't like hing that much, you can ignore it. Also, if you want to make your toast spicier, you can increase the amount of green chilies and chili powder. If you are making this for kids, you can skip the green chilies altogether.

More information about this recipe

I make this besan toast quite often, especially on days when I need a quick breakfast. These toasts are definitely a great egg-free breakfast option. This recipe is how I've made these delicious toasts for years.

When I make these I always add tomatoes. I love the flavor and texture the tomatoes impart in the besan bread toast. However, if you want, you can leave it out, or even the onions, and just make a plain spiced toast.

You can also add other vegetables such as hot or bell peppers, carrots, green onions, and cabbage. If you do this, it's actually a great way to feed your picky kids these nutrient-dense vegetables.

Besan toast must be served immediately otherwise they will become very soggy. You can eat these spiced toasts as is or with tomato ketchup or coriander chutney.

Expert Tips

  1. It is important to chop the vegetables and herbs to make the batter. Otherwise, handling medium or large toasts may become a problem when frying them.
  2. The batter must be smooth, lump-free, and medium in consistency, not thin. It is a good option to add a few tablespoons of gram flour to the thin batter and mix again.
  3. Do you have brown bread, whole wheat bread and white bread at home? Choose any one for this recipe, or make a mixed platter with all 3 varieties.
  4. Want to make it for kids? Skip the green chiles. Also, feed children more vegetables such as green onions, carrots, cabbage, and hot/bell peppers. Go ahead and add these to the batter.
  5. Avoid dipping the bread slices in the batter and leaving them there for too long, or the bread will absorb more liquid and crack.
  6. To produce larger batches, the recipe can be doubled or tripled.
