Although I usually make Shakarkandi Chaat on Navratri fasting days, it tastes just as good at other times. In this recipe, everything is in balance – the sweetness of shakarkandi, the slight spiciness of black pepper, the tangy taste of lemon juice and dry mango powder or amchur. This is a flavor pairing that you will absolutely love. It's a super quick, low-fat, nutritious snack that's perfect for any time of day.

Sweet potatoes are a superfood. This is clearly a better, more nutritious choice than regular potatoes. Since shakarkandi is also naturally sweet and starchy, it serves as a great vegetable to make amazing savory beets in addition to savory dishes like Sweet Potato Chaat.

This Shakarkandi Chaat also contains many essential nutrients and makes it an excellent healthy dish. Since these tubers are rich in fiber, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, this tea automatically becomes a healthy and hearty meal on its own.

When I used to live in Gurgaon (now Gurgaon), we used to eat this Sweet Potato Chaat in winter. This is a common street food sold on horse-drawn carriages in northern India during the cold season. The smoky smell of roasting sweet potatoes is still fresh in my mind. That charm is something else, hard to express in words.

For Shakarkandi Chaat, street vendors used to roast the sweet potatoes over coals, which gave a lovely smoky flavor to the dish. This effect will not be reflected if you bake the tuber in the oven or even steam it in a pan or pressure cooker. Still, this chaat was delicious.

For the spice powder in this Sweet Potato Chaat, I used the spice powder commonly used during the religious fast of Navratri. But when not keeping the vrat, add any spice powder you like. This chaat recipe with shakarkandi is easily scalable. Therefore, you can also prepare it in large batches.

How to Make Sweet Potato Tea

1. First, rinse 260 to 270 sweet potatoes with water. Then, steam or boil them in a pressure cooker or pan. If cooking in a pressure cooker, cook on high pressure for about 3 to 4 whistles with water just covering the sweet potatoes. I steamed sweet potatoes in a rice cooker. In the picture you can see 4 sweet potatoes. But I only used two of them to chat. You can even peel the sweet potatoes first and then steam them.

2. After the sweet potatoes are cooked, peel them gently and chop them into small pieces. Put them in a bowl.

3. Add 1/4 teaspoon black pepper powder, 1/2 teaspoon dried mango powder (amchur Powder) and rock salt (sendha namak).

If making it daily, you can also add red chilli powder and Chaat masala powder. Also add some roasted cumin powder. You can add more or less spice powder according to your taste preference.

4. Then, add ½ to 1 teaspoon lemon juice.

Expert Tips

  1. If you are not making this chaat for religious fast, add red chili powder and chaat masala powder. Alternatively, black salt or rock salt can be added instead.
  2. You can even spice up the chaat by adding chutney, curd and other chaat snacks when you are not preparing to fast.
  3. You can also add 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of roasted cumin powder to this recipe.
  4. The amount of spice powder or even lemon juice can be increased or decreased according to personal preference.

  • Mix gently. Check the taste and add any spice powder or lemon juice if required.

  • Serving shakarkandi ki chaat.

Tips to make shakarkandi ki chaat recipe:
  1. You can also add 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of roasted cumin powder to the recipe.
  2. Recipe can easily be doubled or tripled.
  3. If it is not suitable for Navratri fast then you can use red chilli powder, chaat masala.
  4. You can also add black salt instead of rock salt.
