There are many breads in Indian cuisine such as roti, phulka, paratha, kulcha, poori, bhatura and another one is naan. Naan is an Indian bread made by adding yeast to a dough that is flattened by hand, usually in an elongated shape, and cooked in a tandoor. “Naan” is Persian and means “bread”.

Most of our Indian breads are flat breads, usually made with whole wheat flour and water for the dough, but sometimes all-purpose flour, milk, curd or even soda is used. Then form the dough into medium sized balls, pat them with the palm of your hand or roll them out with a rolling pin and flatten them into a disk and cook them on a hot frying pan or a tawa as we all know it, or in a pan medium cooked. A cylindrical clay/metal oven called a tandoor.

Naan dough is best made with all-purpose flour or maida, but a healthier approach is to use half all-purpose flour and wheat flour, which is also a good idea.

Naan is usually served as-is, warm from the tandoor and slathered in butter. Many times, naan is flavored with garlic and stuffed with cheese. Sometimes the naan is stuffed with potatoes or topped with cranberries and nuts for a richer flavor.

Serve these naans with delicious creamy dal or vegetarian or non-vegetarian gravy.

So, go ahead and decide on the type of naan you want to serve to your family.
