What is a drink shot?

Paan Shot is a rich, dessert-like drink that tastes just like sweet paan. Think: an ice cream shake with all the delicious drink mixes.

If you've had paan before, you know it's made with gulkand (rose jam), coconut, fennel seeds and more in a paan leaf. It can be a bit difficult and time consuming to make as you have to fold each leaf separately. It's fun to eat though – it's nowhere near as fun as these drink shots!

These innovative shots have taken the Indian kitty party circuit by storm. My parents excitedly told me about this fun banana-flavored ice cream-like drink when their friends started serving them at parties – and now my parents serve them all the time, too. They would show me pictures of them taking shots with their friends (it's so cute to see a big group of grandparents “taking shots” haha).

I'm not really a fan of drinking alcohol these days (although I'm perfectly fine consuming it in food form – hello, Rum-soaked fruit cake!) and so it's a fun shot that I can take part in and actually enjoy.

Now, these shots are very concentrated in flavor so this is a drink that can be enjoyed in moderation. You do not want to overdo it – believe me, the taste is intense – and therefore, a few shots per person is better. One to two and you'll feel great. After 4, it starts to lose its intrigue (trust me, I ate some of it during recipe testing, lol).

  • Betel leaves: Also known as Pan. You can find these leaves at your local Indian grocery store. They can vary quite a bit in size and so I've included the number of leaves as well as the weight below – even if it's a bit more/less it will still taste great.
  • fennel seeds
  • Gulkand: It is a rose jam. You can find it at your local Indian grocery store or on amazon.
  • Shredded Sweet Coconut: Use it in drinks, and you can even rim your shot glass with extra coconut if you like!

How to Make a Pan Shot

Making drink shots is so easy! You're basically making a smoothie or milkshake and pouring it into a shot glass.

  1. Remove the stems from the betel leaves, then tear the leaves and place in a blender with the other ingredients (except the ice cream and food coloring).
  2. Blend until really smooth.
  3. Then add ice cream and food coloring and blend again.
  4. Pour the drink into a bowl or jug and refrigerate for 30 minutes, then take it out, stir well, and serve in a shot glass! You'll get some texture from the ingredients when you drink it, but that's as it should be – you want to get that same taste and mouthfeel that comes with drinking betel.

  • Remove the stems and tear off the leaves. Place in a blender with all ingredients except ice cream and food coloring. Blend for 2 minutes in a high powered blender (like a Vitamix) – the mixture should look smooth.

  • Add the ice cream and food coloring and mix again until well combined.

  • Pour into a bowl/serving jar and refrigerate for 30 minutes, then take out, mix well, serve. Rim shot glass with coconut, if desired.

  • If you don't have a powerful blender, you'll want to strain.
  • Please know that no matter how much you mix, the drink will still have some texture but that's how it should be! You want to get the same taste and mouth feel with drinking betel.
  • If you make it in advance, refrigerate it, then let it thaw before serving.
  • To rim the glass, add some water to the rim using your finger or a paper towel and then add the shredded coconut.
